Oleg Gusev, who had been injured in the 25th minute of Dynamo Kiev’s visit to Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk on Sunday, collided with the goalkeeper and lost consciousness.
As the 27-year-old writhed in agony on the turf, in front of Dynamo’s bench in particular, the home side’s Brazilian midfielder Matheus swung into action.
He quickly ripped off his shirt and used it to cover Gusev’s body before kneeling in prayer with the stricken player.
The incident was captured on video and shows Gusev’s side of the story. The Dynamo captain is seen coming down with the ball and passing it to a teammate.
In that instant it became clear that he was in a lot of distress and that his airways were blocked. Both teams’ players rushed over to help.
